Michel Chossudovsky will be speaking in the context of the

Somersfest Lecture and Film Series:

MYTH, MUSIC AND MAN

CHORUS AGAINST WAR

Defeating the myths that lead to War, Poverty and Social Injustice

Lecture and Discussion with

Michel Chossudovsky

Professor of Economics, University of Ottawa

Introduced by Choreographer, David Earle

7:30 pm. May  1 9, Sam Sorbara Auditorium, St. Michaels College, Toronto. Free public lecture

Noted economist and political theorist Michel Chossudovsky explores the theme of how societies confronted with alien ideas, religions, ethnic differences react to the stranger by building consensus to hatred, thus setting the stage for war.

In Somersfests Merman of Orford, the villagers encounter a stranger and create a mythological story about his origins, creating the story which allows them to build consensus to cruelty.

In his talk, Professor  Chossudovsky will explore the history of building consensus as a prelude to war, from the Spanish Inquisition, Nazi Germany, and in todays world, focusing on the aftermath of 9/11 and the US led war in the Middle East and Central Asia.

The  War on Terrorism is a lie. The pretext to wage this war has been fabricated. Realities have been turned upside down. Acts of war are heralded as "humanitarian interventions" geared towards restoring  "democracy". Military occupation and the killing of civilians are presented as "peace-keeping operations."  The derogation of civil liberties is portrayed as a means to providing "domestic security" and upholding civil liberties. Expenditures on health and education are curtailed to finance the military-industrial complex.

Millions of people around the world are being driven into abysmal poverty, and countries are transformed into open territories.

The fabricated realities of the Bush administration have become indelible truths, which form part of a broad political and media consensus.

Millions of people have been misled regarding the causes and consequences of America's war which threatens the future of humanity.
